2023

Located directly across from Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, bca-msm is a contemporary art museum designed to house Las Meninas by Velázquez and its variations by Picasso. The project engages two intersecting grids—one aligned with Mies’ pavilion, the other with Barcelona’s city plan, forming the foundation for nine distinct pavilions. Each pavilion is a variation on a shared architectural language of line, plane, and volume, echoing both the spatial rigor of Mies and the conceptual layering of the artworks within. The result is a museum that positions itself not as a replica, but as an original, deeply informed by its context, its contents, and the idea of transformation through variation.
